At the Parkview Children’s Centre, we know that finding quality programs for your child is important to parents. You desire an attractive, interesting, safe and creative placement for your children. Our three schools accept infants, toddlers and preschool aged children from infants to 4 years of age. Our St. Gregory School also offers a before and after school program as well as camps during school breaks and throughout the summer. We’re open from 7:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. We find these hours and the range of programs we offer meet the Burlington and Oakville daycare needs of most parents in our community. Our schools are designed to be attractive and comfortable places in which young children can spend their days. The use of natural colours throughout our Oakville and Burlington daycare buildings and the amount and quality of light in each of our schoolrooms are features that help to make your child’s day pleasant, comfortable and creative. We know that physical environment is important to the mood or tone of a building. We focus on creating an ideal environment for young people which encourages them to interact with others and to learn and play in a positive fashion.Oakville and Burlington Infant, Toddler and Preschool Programs Based on Research
We strongly believe in the education model known as the Reggio Emilia program. This approach to preschool educational foundations has been acknowledged as nurturing, creative and successful for over 50 years. It believes that the child is competent, inventive and full of ideas. It is the teacher’s job to support children as they explore their world by asking questions and by designing and completing projects.Listed below are some other tenets of the Reggio Emilia approach to teaching young children. You’ll find many of these elements in our Burlington and Oakville preschool programs:
- Nature and art are utilized in classroom activities
- Children explore their world and are supported in their curiosity by professionally trained staff
- The program is based in projects and interactive play
- Students use natural materials from the environment in their projects
- Collaboration between children, teachers and parents is valued and encouraged at our schools
- Relationships between people and the natural world are explored
- Teachers are encouraged to listen closely and to provoke further thought in the children
- Children are encouraged to ask questions and find resources to answer those questions
- Children are regarded as resourceful, curious, imaginative and inventive
- Children communicate through language, movement, building, music, sculpture and drawing
- Teachers are encouraged to be nurturers, partners and guides to the children.
- Assessment is based on productions and performances– not tests– as found in traditional schools
- The curriculum evolves to support the child’s interests and abilities
- A classroom atmosphere of joy and playfulness pervades in our Halton child care schools
- The school day is based around inquiry and project based learning
What does some of the research say about this approach to education found in our Oakville and Burlington daycare programs? “Over the past six decades the Reggio approach to early childhood education has become a ‘gold standard’ that many have tried to replicate.” (Moss 2005). Other research has noted that the Reggio Emilia approach is “….one of the best systems of education in the world.” (Edwards, Gandidni and Forman 1993). The respected author and teacher Lella Gandini writes: “Parents are an essential component of the program– a competent and active part of their children’s learning experience….their right to participation is respected and supported; it takes many forms and can help to ensure the welfare of all children in the program.”
At Parkview Children’s Centre we believe it takes a village to raise a child. One parent writes: “The Reggio Emilia approach promotes a community of families working together to give the best relationships, education, and respect towards one another while having fun.”
